The American Diabetes Association is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Manager, Health Policy. The Manager will keep abreast of legislative and regulatory changes in health policy at the state and federal levels, including the private insurance market, Medicaid, and Medicare. This person will use his/her expertise in the U.S. healthcare system and knowledge of specific health coverage issues affecting people with diabetes in order to create, develop, and recommend Association policies and positions on federal and state legislative and regulatory activities. This person will communicate regularly with a variety of audiences, including Association lobbying staff at the federal and state levels, other various Association staff and volunteers, and external partners to convey Association policies and positions within the healthcare environment.

The ideal candidate will be well-versed in the U.S. healthcare system, with particular knowledge of entitlement programs as well as current healthcare reform issues. Additionally, the candidate will have demonstrated policy analysis skills, superior writing skills, as well as comfort and familiarity with reading and analyzing legislation.

Major duties and responsibilities include:
  • Providing specialized, high-level expertise related to the healthcare system, federal and state regulation, and consumer strategies to assist the Association in addressing complex healthcare issues facing people with diabetes.
  • Monitoring federal and state regulations and policies affecting healthcare for people with diabetes.
  • Representing the Association in public forums on healthcare-related issues.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Educational and work-related background in health policy
  • Familiarity with legislative and regulatory processes at state and/or federal levels
  • Knowledge of current healthcare reform issues
  • In-depth understanding of laws and regulations governing health coverage issues
  • Advanced analytical and writing skills to guide the creation and development of Association policy and recommendations
  • Bachelor's degree, plus post-graduate courses or professional training in health policy
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations governing the U.S. healthcare system
  • Oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Superior writing, analytical and editing skills, and computer literacy
  • Ability to organize, shift priorities, and manage multiple projects
